For the consumers who feel ‘ticket gouging’ and ‘sanctioned scalping’ occurs for most concerts these days, there may not be a change in sight.
A brief visit to the Ticketmaster’s profile on Consumer Affairs website, shows that there is no shortage of people that feel negatively about Ticketmaster services. Ticketmaster, which is a subsidiary of “Live Nation Entertainment” was accused in a new case that it held a monopoly on ticketing.
Back in 2009, when Live Nation acquired Ticketmaster, it drew criticism from the entertainment industry (from the likes of Bruce Springstein and others) as well as US Senators that it would amount to a monopoly.
Songkick, a company that offers concert tracking, organization, alerts and purchasing attempted to sue Ticketmaster. US District Judge stated that Songkick and it’s legal team had a ‘weak showing’ to prove that it would suffer harm if a preliminary injunction was not made to prevent Ticketmaster from charging large fees to customers for presale tickets.
The courts are ruling that the market still has room for other ticket sellers to operate. The Live Nation / Ticketmaster team will still have work ahead of them. Even though the preliminary injunction was blocked, their case will still go forward.
